A Summer Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist for Diesel Trucks

The pre-trip inspection a driver does in January is not the inspection that catches summer breakdowns. Heat changes what fails on a commercial truck, and a checklist built around cold-weather problems will walk right past the things that strand trucks in July. In the Charleston heat, the components under the most stress are tires, cooling, belts, batteries, and the A/C — and most warm-weather roadside failures show warning signs during a careful pre-trip if the driver knows what to look for.
Tires: The Number One Summer Breakdown
Heat and tires are a dangerous combination. Hot pavement plus underinflation plus highway speed builds heat inside the casing until the tire comes apart. Check cold inflation pressures against spec before the truck rolls — not after it has been running, when readings are artificially high. Look for uneven wear, cuts, bulges, and embedded debris, and pay attention to the inner duals, which hide the most failures. Tread separation and blowouts are far more common in summer, and a roadside tire on a hot shoulder is one of the more dangerous repairs a driver or technician has to do.
Cooling System and Coolant Level
Summer is when a marginal cooling system finally overheats. During the pre-trip, check the coolant level at the surge tank when the engine is cold, scan the radiator and charge-air cooler for bugs and debris blocking airflow, and look for green or pink residue that points to a slow leak. Squeeze the upper radiator hose when cool — it should be firm, not mushy or rock-hard — and check that the hoses are not swollen or cracked at the clamps. A fan clutch that is not engaging or a partially blocked radiator will not show up in the driveway but will climb toward derate on a loaded grade in the heat.
Belts and the A/C Drive
The serpentine belt drives the water pump, alternator, and A/C compressor, and heat accelerates belt aging. Look for glazing, cracks, and fraying, and check the tensioner for play. A belt that lets go in summer takes your charging, your cooling, and your A/C with it all at once.
Batteries and Charging
Most people associate dead batteries with winter, but heat is what actually kills them — high temperatures cook the electrolyte and shorten battery life, and the failure shows up as a no-start on the next cold morning or a hard-start in the yard. During the pre-trip, check that terminals are clean and tight and that hold-downs are secure, since vibration plus corrosion is a common warm-weather no-start cause. If a battery is several seasons old, summer is when it is most likely to give out.
Air Conditioning and Cab Climate
A/C is a safety item in summer, not a luxury. A driver fighting heat fatigue is slower to react and quicker to make mistakes. Confirm the system blows genuinely cold at the vents, not just cool, and note any musty smell or water on the cab floor that points to a clogged evaporator drain. It is far better to find a weak A/C system in the yard than during a heat wave with a full schedule.
The Standard Items Still Matter
None of this replaces the federally required pre-trip. Lights, brakes, air system and governor cut-out, steering, suspension, leaks under the truck, mirrors, wipers, horn, and load securement all still need to be checked every day. The summer items above are additions to that routine, aimed at the failures heat makes more likely — not a substitute for it.
