Engine Derate & Reduced Power
Reduced power, a speed limit, or a 5 mph crawl means the truck has derated itself to protect something — usually the emissions system. We come to your location, read the SPN/FMI codes behind it, fix the cause, and reset so the unit moves under its own power instead of waiting on a tow.
What Triggers a Derate
The most common trigger — DEF quality or level faults, SCR efficiency, and NOx sensor problems that step the truck down and end in a speed limit.
A clogged DPF, high soot load, or a failed or incomplete regen that forces the engine into reduced power until the filter is dealt with.
Low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, or low coolant level derates meant to protect the engine from real mechanical damage.
Turbo, boost, charge-air, and sensor faults that trip a power reduction — sometimes a failing sensor, sometimes a real airflow problem.
Read the SPN/FMI, Fix the Cause
A derate is the truck's protection, not the failure itself. The engine cut power because a system reported a fault, and the SPN/FMI code names exactly which one. Clearing the derate without reading that code is guessing — and on emissions derates it usually comes right back, often at a lower speed limit than before.
We connect at the truck, read the active and stored SPN/FMI codes, and trace the derate to its actual trigger — DEF, SCR, DPF, a sensor, or an engine-protection fault. Then we repair or direct and reset properly, so the unit comes out of limp mode and stays out instead of crawling back onto a tow truck.

Active, stored, and pending J1939 faults show exactly which system reported the problem that put the truck into a derate.

Most derates are the emissions system protecting itself — DEF faults, SCR or NOx sensor problems, a clogged DPF, or a failed regen. Others come from low oil pressure, coolant temperature, or turbo and boost faults. The SPN/FMI codes tell us which system triggered it, so we diagnose the cause rather than guess.
We fix the cause, then reset. Simply clearing a derate without addressing what triggered it usually brings it right back, sometimes worse. We read the codes, confirm the fault, repair or direct, and only then reset so the truck stays out of limp mode.
SPN and FMI are the standard J1939 fault codes commercial diesels use. The SPN identifies which component or system reported the fault and the FMI describes the type of failure. Reading them is how we pinpoint what put the truck into a derate instead of throwing parts at it.
